Universal Design or Design for all is the concept that homes should work for all family members regardless of their age or
physical abilities. Today’s home buyer wants the stylish creature comforts to which they're accustomed, regardless of their
physical abilities, not the sterile "nursing home" look with wheelchair ramps and stainless steel grab bars. Children and
adults should be able to access work or storage spaces with minimal effort, there should be ample room to move large objects
through doorways and you should be able to open a door with your elbow when loaded down with grocery bags OR toys.
Minimal or no stairs make entry into the home a breeze, and makes moving furniture a snap. Large rooms with open areas, good light and
hard surface floors are attractive and cheery as well as easier to maintain. Pull out shelves in cabinets make finding rarely
used utensils an easy task and allows little ones to help with the kitchen tasks. A raised dishwasher saves the bending
needed to load and unload the dishes, Lowered light switches make it easier for those in a chair or the younger members
of the family to turn the lights off or on, showers with large open floor area and low thresholds make taking a shower
easier and more relaxing as well as allowing people of all physical abilities to perform the task with minimal assistance.
